Moisture and garage doors
The environment
Snohomish County sits on Puget Sound. The air is damp most of the year, it rains through fall, winter, and spring, and the marine layer keeps surfaces moist even between storms. On the coastal towns (Edmonds, Mukilteo, the west side) salt air joins the mix and accelerates everything.
What it does to garage doors
Springs corrode before they wear out, the rust weakens the metal before the cycle count would have broken it. Cables fray at the bottom where they sit in the damp. Tracks and hinges rust on the outside, pit on the inside. Bottom seals split from freeze-thaw and moisture cycling. Wood doors swell and stick.
The response
A door in this county gets the damp-climate service interval, not the dry-climate one, the annual check that catches rust and fray before the snap. When a part does go, the replacement choice matters: sealed bearings over open bearings, nylon rollers over bare steel, and a coated bottom seal that does not sit in standing water. On the coast the interval is even shorter.
